We are ready for the 2024 Varsity Football tournament

As the 2024 Varsity Football tournament approaches, the North-West University (NWU) is gearing up for a strong performance in both the men's and women's competitions.

In their eighth week of preparation, the men's team is showing promising signs of readiness under the guidance of coach Nkululeko Malgas.

The women's team, led by head coach Alfa Dolopi and team captain Hlalefang "Castro" Moledi, is also set to compete.

Alumni honoured for outstanding teaching skills

Two alumni from the North-West University (NWU), Tumelo Malebelela and Mapule Sechogo, have been recognised for their exceptional teaching abilities.

Tumelo was honoured at the Ngaka Modiri Molema district Teaching Awards and will represent the district at the Provincial Awards in August 2024.His dedication to education was previously acknowledged when he received the Teacher’s Award in the Excellence in Secondary Teaching category during the North West Provincial Teaching Awards in 2023.

Academic and student named finalists for the 2024 South African Women in Science Awards

North-West University (NWU) academic Prof Olubukola Oluranti Babalola and student Sinenhlanhla Mthembu have been named finalists for the 2024 South African Women in Science Awards (SAWiSA).

These awards recognise outstanding contributions by women in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Prof Babalola and Sinenhlanhla will join other distinguished women at the awards ceremony on 15 August in Mbombela.

Putting the spotlight on men’s health and wellbeing

The Employee Wellness unit at the North-West University's (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus will be hosting an interactive Men’s Health and Wellbeing Awareness session on 25 July at 09:00 on the Vanderbijlpark Campus. The session will be interactive, allowing both online and in-person attendees to engage with the facilitators.

Event organiser and employee wellness specialist Genevieve Poodhun says they decided to host this session as statistics and input from internal and external stakeholders indicate that men underutilise available health and wellness services.

Prof Bismark Tyobeka to deliver keynote address at Nelson Mandela Memorial Lecture

Prof Bismark Tyobeka, principal and vice-chancellor of the North-West University (NWU), will be delivering the keynote address at the Nelson Mandela Memorial Lecture on 24 July at 10:00 at the Mmabatho Civic Centre.

This event is a collaborative effort between the Office of the Premier of North West, the Mahikeng Local Municipality, the NWU and the Moral Regeneration Movement.

Prof Wannie Carstens awarded prestigious prize for contributions to Afrikaans

Prof Wannie Carstens, the former director of the School of Languages at the North-West University (NWU), has been awarded the prestigious Jan H Marais Prize for his exceptional contributions to Afrikaans as a scientific language by the Suid-Afrikaanse Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns (the South African Academy of Science and Arts). This is in recognition of his high level and high quality of work, as well as his expert contribution to Afrikaans linguistics.

Faculty of Humanities announces first international spring school

The Faculty of Humanities at North-West University (NWU) is delighted to announce its inaugural International Spring School, set to take place from 16 to 20 September 2024 at the Khaya iBhubesi Conference Centre in Parys.

This event marks a significant milestone for the faculty, aiming to unite students, study leaders and researchers from various disciplines in the humanities to explore the future of the field amidst the challenges and opportunities presented by modernity and innovation.

Alumnus paves the way for healthy immune systems

North-West University (NWU) alumnus Kgalalelo Pakwe, an entrepreneur and forensic analyst for the South African Police Service, has created an innovative health product, Flu-Away Shots.

With a BSc in biological and environmental science and an honours degree in microbiology, Kgalalelo developed Flu-Away Shots to help boost the immune system, particularly during the winter months when flu is more prevalent.
