Ikateleng helping students get distinctions

Sabata Abram Mafobokoane, who was part of the Ikateleng initiative in 2020, made headlines after attaining eight distinctions for his National Senior Certificate. Ikateleng has been in existence for approximately 33 years and provides supplementary teaching in mathematics, economics, business studies, accounting, life sciences, physical sciences and English to high school learners from Grade 10 to Grade 12.

Sabata, who was a learner at Poelano Secondary School in Evaton, Gauteng, started attending Ikateleng on 1 February 2020.

Plans for the NWU Medical School on track

The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the enormous stress and burden placed on South Africa’s medical professionals have dramatically strengthened the North-West University’s case for a medical school in North West.

Official NWU documents suggest that despite competing interests and financial pressures due to Covid-19, the pandemic has highlighted the need for the facility.

NWU joins in the fight against GBV

During the first three weeks of lockdown last year, gender-based violence (GBV) victims were trapped with their abusers, with no place to hide. During that time the government’s GBV and femicide command centre alone recorded more than 120 000 victims. Later that year police minister Bheki Cele announced that South Africa was still the rape capital of the world, with about 132 incidents per 100 000 people.
