Berries for export are a juicy market and could become even more so if berry farmers have partners such as the North-West University (NWU).

Wanting to see first-hand how a potential partnership could bear fruit for economic growth in the province, a top-level NWU delegation recently visited the Madikwe Berry Farm.

The continued climb of the North-West University (NWU) in global rankings has taken it to the top 4,4% of global universities. This is according to the 2023 edition of the Global 2000 list of rankings published by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR). It is an improvement from being in the top 4,5% for 2022/2023 and in the top 4,7% in the 2021/2022 edition of the rankings.

This impressive achievement was published on 15 May on the cwur.org website. The NWU was ranked according to academic performance among 20 531 universities worldwide.

Expert knowledge is needed to protect and manage water, an essential and scarce natural resource. As a relatively dry country, South Africa faces crucial challenges that include insufficient water, water quality problems, inadequate infrastructure and inconsistency in access.

The Water Research Commission (WRC) plays an integral role in enabling the country to address these issues. One of the NWU’s own is now stepping up to play a part in this commission’s important work.

The North-West University (NWU) partnered with the National Press Club (NPC) to celebrate journalists' extraordinary work and dedication at the 2022 Newsmaker & Journalist of the Year awards.

The prestigious award ceremony was held on Thursday, 20 April, in Menlyn, Pretoria and was attended by journalists and academics. The NWU's deputy vice-chancellor for planning and Vanderbijlpark Campus operations, Prof Linda du Plessis, gave the keynote address.

It has been a week since you were crowned Varsity Cup champions and I still struggle to find words for how proud I am of you. What a wonderful achievement. You took on the best university rugby teams and players in the country and you came out on top. But that is not all. The spirit with which you represented the North-West University (NWU) was nothing short of inspirational. The skills you displayed on the field were exceptional, but it was your determination, the respect you showed your opponents, your integrity and humility in victory that made you extraordinary.

They came, they saw, and they conquered. The North-West University (NWU) Eagles are the newly crowned Varsity Cup champions after beating Ikeys from the University of Cape Town (UCT) 27-25 at the Fanie du Toit Sport Grounds in Potchefstroom on Monday night, 17 April 2023.

The half-time score read 20-9 for the Eagles. This marks the first time the NWU Eagles won the trophy since 2016, and the second time overall.

Seipati Poopedi, a master’s student at the North-West University (NWU), recently participated in the Wetskills Water Challenge in Cape Town and her team walked away with the spoils.

Her team members were Tariro Marekwa, an MSc student from the University of Cape Town, Dr Fulya Kandamir from Antalya Metropolitan Municipality Climate Change in Turkey, Zanele Lulane of the Joint River Basin Authorities Project Board in Eswatini, and Nomandla Nxusa from Rand Water South Africa.

The North-West University (NWU) continues to deliver chartered accounting students of the highest calibre, as is evident from the recently released results of the Initial Test of Competence (ITC) of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Namibia (ICAN), which was written in January.

On the surface there is little commonality between the two. One is a predominantly homogenous first-world country with a population of 10,5 million people where you are more likely to see the northern lights than a lanky giraffe. It occupies an area of 447,425 km2 . The other is almost thrice as large. Its contours encapsulates 1,221,037 km2  and within it a diverse population of 60,6 million people live in a developing country at the foot of Africa.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a huge threat to Africa’s and, by extension, the world’s health care systems and should be addressed with haste. This according to Prof Carlos Bezuidenhout, director of the Unit for Environmental Sciences and Management, Microbiology (METSI) at the North-West University’s Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences.

AMR refers to the resistance that microbes develop to certain pharmaceutical drugs.
