NWU appoints new principal and vice-chancellor

The North-West University (NWU) Council is proud to announce the appointment of alumnus Dr Bismark Tyobeka as its new principal and vice-chancellor.

Dr Tyobeka who is recognised as one of the leading nuclear power experts in the world, will steer the NWU for the next five years, commencing on 1 June 2022. He follows in the footsteps of Prof Dan Kgwadi who left the employment of the NWU at the end of January 2022.

NWU to host Hockey World Cup in April at last

It is no joke. From 1 April, the North-West University (NWU) will host the 2022 Women's FIH Hockey Junior World Cup at the Astroturf fields in Potchefstroom.

This is the ninth time the event has been presented, and it would have taken place in December, but the Omicron variant of the Covid-19 virus put paid to those plans.

Now, 16 teams comprising the best under-21 hockey players on the planet will come together next to the Mooi River from 1 to 12 April.

NWU and Universität Duisburg-Essen develop early warning tool for metal pollution in fresh water

Researchers from North-West University (NWU) and Universität Duisburg-Essen in Germany have developed an early warning tool for metal pollution in freshwater systems worldwide.

This research achievement is a collaboration between the Water Research Group, the NWU led by Prof Nico Smit and Prof Victor Wepener and the Universität Duisburg-Essen’s Aquatische Ökologie (Aquatic Ecology) Group, led by Prof Bernd Sures and Dr Sonja Zimmerman.

The project is funded by the National Research Foundation and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

NWU introduces new sport for visually impaired students

The North-West University (NWU) has included goalball – a sport specifically played by visually impaired people – in its 2022 sporting codes.

On 25 February the South African National goalball champions team played a demonstration game on the NWU’s Mahikeng Campus to introduce the sport to students.

According to Jim Molautsi, director of Student Life, one of the department’s goals is to create a culture that celebrates diversity and enhances social cohesion.

Top service award for NWU astronomer

The United Kingdom’s Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) has presented its 2022 Service Award for Astronomy to Prof Don Kurtz of the North-West University (NWU).

"I am delighted to be recognised by the RAS for my outreach and service activities over my 55-year career," says Prof Kurtz.

He joined the NWU’s Mahikeng Campus as extraordinary professor in 2021, and has an A1 research rating from the South African National Research Foundation.

Renovation of Education Library

The extension and renovation of the Education Library (C6c) on the Potchefstroom campus will start in January 2022. Site handover will take place on 11 January and the estimated time of completion is July 2022.

The spaces of the current Education library will be renovated and a double storey extension will be added to the front of the library. The ground floor will host a copy shop and the new EduLab, with connected working space for 104 students.
