Botswana minister obtains his PhD from the NWU Business School

We wish to extend huge congratulations to the Minister of Land and Water Affairs of the Republic of Botswana, Dr Kefentse C Mzwinila, for graduating with a PhD degree from the NWU Business School on 25 May 2022.                                          

Dr Mzwinila graduated from Lafayette College in the United States of America with a BA degree in Economics and Business Administration, and a BSc degree in Psychology.

Feather in NWU’s cap as it bags prestigious prize

As its digital business strategy begins to gain momentum, the North-West University (NWU) is being recognised for its digitisation progress.

On 20 April 2022 the university received an external award for the successful implementation of Planon, an integrated workplace management system (IWMS). The award was presented by the South African Facilities Management Association for the Technology Implementation of the Year 2022.

SANBS and NWU in bid to boost much-needed blood stocks

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) says its stocks are unstable, and is urging the public to kindly donate blood regularly to avoid blood shortages.

Meanwhile, the North-West University (NWU) is contributing to the campaign by hosting additional blood donation drives.  Three drives, in association with the SANBS, have already taken place on the NWU’s campuses this year, and more will be held this month to help replenish SANBS blood stocks.

NWU students: enter the 2022 Leopards Lair Business Competition

Do you have a business idea? The North-West University (NWU) bhive Enterprise Development Centre (EDC) and Technology Transfer and Innovation Support (TTIS) office are looking for innovative business ideas or product inventions.

NWU undergraduate and postgraduate entrepreneurs are thereby invited to enter Leopards Lair Business Competition by submitting their innovative business ideas before 30 May 2022.

Values are a driving force for the NWU

The North-West University (NWU) is proud to be a value-driven institution and is currently busy with a campaign to relaunch the values that guide staff, students and other stakeholders.

The campaign kicked off in March 2022 with a cook-off held for the University Management Committee (UMC) and an official launch in the form of a gala evening.

The process leading up to this official launch started a while ago, however, and a lot of hard work has been done to reach this point.

NWU researchers conduct South Africa’s first environmental social work study

Climate change, environmental destruction and the collapse of biodiversity pose a severe threat to the planet and mankind, and especially to poor and marginalised communities.

The threat may be even greater for citizens of South Africa as the southern African region has been identified as a hotspot. In recent years, South Africa has experienced significant changes in weather patterns, fuelling concerns about their impact on vulnerable people. This has in turn given rise to a new branch of social work known as environmental social work (ESW).

World Intellectual Property Day celebrated at NWU

World Intellectual Property Day is annually celebrated on 26 April, under the auspices of the United Nations’ World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). This year’s theme was “IP and Youth: Innovating for a Better Future”.

This year, the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Technology Transfer and Innovation Support (TTIS) office – who are the custodians of intellectual property (IP) at the university – led the celebrations at the three NWU campuses with fun-filled educational events between 20 April and 12 May.

NWU academic inducted as fellow of Nigeria Academy of Science

North-West University (NWU) academic Prof Olubukola Oluranti Babalola was elected a fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS) during its annual general meeting earlier this year.

She was formally inducted as fellow, along with 10 international distinguished scientists on 12 May 2022.

The NAS fellow induction is one of the highest honours of the academy, and each fellow receives a certificate and gold medal.

Eskom Development Foundation injects another R2,9 million into NWU's Ikateleng project

Ikateleng, a long-running scholar support project of the North-West University (NWU), has received another R2,9 million from the Eskom Development Foundation.

To celebrate the generous donation, the foundation’s CEO, Cecil Ramonotsi, recently joined the NWU’s acting vice-chancellor, Prof Linda du Plessis, at the Ikateleng Centre at the Dr Molefi Oliphant Secondary School in Bophelong.

NWU rakes in medals at national championships

Athletes from the North-West University (NWU) – both former and current – were in exceptional form during the recently held Athletics South Africa Senior Track and Field Championships in Green Point, Cape Town.

In all, sixteen medals were won in a variety of codes.

Javelin throwers Johann Grobler and Jo-Ané van Dyk claimed gold, as did 20 km race walkers Marissa Swanepoel and Wayne Snyman. Valco van Wyk leapt the highest of all in the pole vault.
