NWU students to take part in the African Human Rights Moot Court Competition

Two North-West University (NWU) students – Africa Thaba from the Mahikeng Campus and Denise Geel from the Potchefstroom Campus – have been selected to represent the NWU at the 31st Christof Heyns African Human Rights Moot Court Competition. The competition will take place at British University in Cairo, Egypt from 25 to 30 July 2022.

The two final-year LLB students will be accompanied by NWU Faculty of Law representative Advocate Getsia Zazo, who has been helping the two with preparations.

Inaugural lecture sheds light on dark energy and why the theory of gravity is at a crossroads

On 14 July 2022, North-West University (NWU) professor in the subject group Physics, Prof Amare Abebe Gidelew, presented his inaugural lecture titled “Matters of Gravity: The how and why of cosmic evolution”. 

Prof Gidelew presented a brief account of one of humanity’s greatest adventures: trying to understand the origin, evolution, and ultimate fate of the universe we live in.

He showed that our understanding of the universe and the physical processes involved in its evolution has in itself evolved over time.

NWU Eagles ready to soar in 2022 Varsity Football tournament

With the Varsity Football tournament starting on 21 July 2022, North-West University (NWU) coach Karabo Masehela says the NWU Eagles are ready to take flight in this year’s tournament.

Back in 2019, the NWU Eagles made history by lifting the cup for the first time, and while they were performing well in 2021, they never quite reached the heights expected of them as defending champions.

“The boys are really excited about the upcoming Varsity Football tournament and are physically and mentally ready to take the lead,” he says.

Junior karate coach to represent NWU on international stage

Onalenna Ndlangisa, junior karate coach at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus, was chosen at the recent University Sports South Africa (USSA) championship to represent South Africa at the 2022 Federation Internationale du Sport Universitaire / International University Sports Federation (FISU) University World Cup Combat Sports in Turkey later this year.

Onalenna, who is currently enrolled for a BA degree in industrial psychology, joined the NWU karate team in 2018.

NWU researchers test medicinal plants used for contraception

For women who cannot take commercial contraceptives for health or other reasons or cannot access them, North-West University (NWU) researchers and traditional health practitioners from the North West province are exploring alternatives: the use of medicinal plants.

The project is a multistakeholder collaboration led by Dr Arthur Moroole, a postdoctoral research fellow at the NWU, under the mentorship of Prof Simeone Materechera and Prof Oladapo Aremu of the Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) Centre.

How regulating mobile money can boost financial inclusion

North-West University (NWU) LLD candidate Elfas Torrerai has done a statutory analysis of the use and regulation of mobile money to promote financial inclusion in developing countries.

The title of his study is “A comparative statutory analysis of the use and regulation of mobile money to promote financial inclusion for the poor in Zimbabwe”.

Better coordination and collaboration can boost food security in rural South Africa

“My passion for rural development started when I realised that there are families who go to bed without food. I became more interested through my research on key strategies and interventions that can assist the country on how rural development can be best implemented to ensure that food is secure and rural areas are developed,” says Dr Maria Mphahlele, North-West University (NWU) PhD graduate.

NWU hosts property investment workshop

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences recently hosted a property investment workshop for students.

The workshop – themed “Empowering South Africa’s youth through property entrepreneurship” – was jointly hosted with the South African Property Investment club (SAPIN) and the Black Management Forum (BMF).

Dr Alex Molefi from the faculty says the purpose of the workshop was to ensure that students understand the different professions within property investment and how individuals can invest in property.

NWU teaches high school learners more about geographic mapping

The subject group Geography on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus recently hosted 44 Grade 11 and 12 learners from the Tiego Tawana High School to teach them more about the Geographic Information System (GIS) software application.

GIS is a system that creates, manages, analyses, and maps all types of data. GIS connects data to a map, integrating location data (where things are) with all types of descriptive information (what things are like there). This provides a foundation for mapping and analysis that is used in science and almost every industry.
