Dr Bobby Moroe, North-West University (NWU) alumnus and the consul-general of South Africa in Lagos, Nigeria, has been appointed as a professor of practice in the research focus area Afrocentric Governance of Public Affairs (AGoPA) from 1 June 2023 to 31 May 2026.
In his new role, Dr Moroe will play an active part in training both undergraduate and postgraduate students in the specialised field of AGoPA.
Dr Moroe’s educational background includes a bachelor's degree, an honours degree in political science, and a master's degree in international relations and peace studies, all obtained from the NWU. He further holds a PhD from the University of Kwazulu-Natal.
Beyond his academic achievements, Dr Moroe has an exemplary career as a South African diplomat, serving in the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) for 18 years. With his vast experience, he has made substantial contributions to the field of diplomacy and international relations, solidifying his reputation as a writer, scholar, researcher, and avid reader.
He recently published his first book, South Africa and India – A Perspective on Post-Apartheid Diplomatic Relations, which chronicles the historical background of the relationship between these two nations. The book delves into the exploration of how they leveraged their diplomatic ties for mutual benefits in the post-apartheid era.
He has also shared his insights and experiences through extensive writings on various topics, including diplomacy, international relations, Covid-19, and youth development. His works on the relations between South Africa and Nigeria have been widely published by national and international media outlets, offering valuable insights accessible to a wide audience.
Dr Moroe recently contributed a chapter titled "The Nuances of Immigration between Post-Apartheid South Africa and Nigeria – Prospects and Challenges," in the book The South African Handbook of Agency, Freedom and Justice: Citizens in Conversation.
Prior to his appointment as the consul-general of South Africa in Lagos, he served as the deputy high commissioner of South Africa at the South African High Commission in Abuja, where he spent five years.
In his current position, Dr Moroe has diverse responsibilities such as promoting trade and investment, initiating social cohesion projects through strategic partnerships, facilitating people-to-people movement between the two countries, and positioning South Africa as an attractive destination for tourism and education.
Before joining DIRCO, Dr Moroe also served as a lecturer at the NWU and played a pivotal role in transforming the subject group Political Science and International Relations.
