NWU career empowerment seminar unlocks opportunities

The North-West University’s (NWU) Alumni Relations office and the Career Centre recently hosted a career empowerment seminar for postgraduate students.

The aim of the seminar was to equip them with the necessary skills, and to provide them with the insight and resources they need to navigate the professional world and to make informed career decisions.

Various companies made presentations at the event, including the Small Enterprises Development Agency, the National Youth Development Agency, and the Department of Labour.

Motivational speaker Pastor Israel Motsamai advised and encouraged students to envision themselves achieving their goals and to visualise positive outcomes.

“This technique can help motivate you and give you a clear mental image of where you see yourself,” he said.

He emphasised that they should see challenges as opportunities for growth and learning, rather than obstacles. Embracing these challenges will help them to develop resilience, problem-solving skills, and the ability to adapt to new situations.

“As you embark on your post-graduation journey, remember that your learning and growth never stops. Embrace the spirit of continuous learning and seek out opportunities to expand your knowledge and skills. Stay curious, embrace new experiences, and always strive for excellence. Your potential is limitless, and you can achieve great things with determination and perseverance. Keep pushing forward, and never stop believing in yourself," he added.

Prof Sonia Swanepoel, deputy vice-chancellor for community engagement and Mahikeng Campus operations, encouraged the students to engage in lifelong learning. “Attend courses and seminars, and always demonstrate your competence.”

She added that students should also embrace the concept of servant leadership.

“The principle of servant leadership is to be of service to others, and it is not necessary to be a manager to practice servant leadership values and principles.

"Continue to learn and better yourself, and remember this – do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” said Prof Swanepoel.
