A researcher in physiology at the North-West University (NWU) has received one of the highest levels of recognition for excellence in higher education teaching in South Africa. Dr Annemarie Wentzel, senior lecturer and researcher in physiology, is one of only six recipients of the 2026 National Teaching Awards (NUTA).

Rebaone Mofokeng and Nolwandle Khumalo were awarded the DSTI-Prof. Keolebogile Shirley Motaung Fellowships at the 2026 South African Women in Science Awards on 20 August 2026. Rebaone received the Master’s Fellowship, while Nolwandle received the Doctoral Fellowship.
For Rebaone, the award is recognition of a research journey built on perseverance and support.
The North-West University (NWU) has achieved an exceptional 99% pass rate in the combined January and June 2026 Initial Assessment of Competence (IAC) examinations administered by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA).
The achievement places the NWU well above the national combined pass rate of 73%. In the January examination, the university recorded a pass rate of 97%, compared with the national average of 65%.
The historic rise of the North-West University (NWU) Soccer Institute into professional football has earned another milestone after captain Aphelele Sibisi was named the 2026 North West Sport Star of the Year at the 10th North West Sports Awards held at the Sun City Superbowl on Saturday, 1 August 2026.
The award, determined through a public vote, was in recognition of his performances and leadership during the first half of the season.
