Academic honoured with international fellowship

North-West University (NWU) academic Prof Olubukola Oluranti Babalola has been awarded an honourary fellowship by the International Science Council in Paris, France.

This fellowship is the highest accolade the ISC can bestow on an individual, and acknowledges their exceptional efforts in advancing science as a global public good.

The ISC is a non-governmental organisation with a unique global membership that brings together more than 245 international scientific unions and associations, including academies, research councils, federations and societies.

Modest growth outlook emphasises urgency of growth-orientated policies and projects

As was expected, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) unanimously decided at a fourth consecutive meeting on 25 January (its first meeting of 2024) to again keep interest rates unchanged and therefore higher for longer.

Prof Raymond Parsons, economist from the North-West University (NWU) Business School, says the tone of the MPC’s statement remained highly cautious, as it did not see the battle against inflation as yet having been permanently won.

A shared vision ahead: an engagement that marks a new era of cooperation

On Monday, 18 December 2023 the North-West University (NWU) and the Mine Health and Safety Council (MHSC) engaged in a discussion aimed at promoting collaboration and fostering a relationship that will benefit both parties.

The meeting took place at the office of the of the vice-chancellor in Building F1 on the Potchefstroom Campus, with both parties agreeing on a commitment to signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on a pre-agreed basis in February 2024.

NWU receives the necessary Ministerial support for the establishment of the Medical School

The North-West University (NWU) is delighted to announce that the Minister of Health, Dr M.J. Phaahla, MP, has officially supported the university’s plan to establish the NWU Medical School. “I am pleased to inform you that the NDOH was happy with your university’s initiative of setting up a medical training programme that has unique features of integrating primary health care early into the training of medical doctors. I am therefore pleased to provide your institution with my support in principle.

Building brighter futures: the inaugural SASS programme strives to empower tomorrow’s leaders

The Higher Education and Leadership Management (HELM) organisation launched the Student Affairs and Student Success (SASS) programme earlier this year at the Kopanong Hotel and Conference Centre in Benoni, Johannesburg.

SASS is a national leadership capacitation programme for university staff who are engaged in the development, support and provision of services for students. The programme aims to significantly promote student success, institutional leadership and social justice at public universities across the country.

Ladies football team crowned 2023 stream B USSA champions

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus ladies football team has been crowned stream B University Sports South Africa (USSA) champions after they defeated Nelson Mandela University by 1-0 in the final of the tournament hosted at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology from 4 to 8 December 2023.

Academics gain insight into the internationalisation of higher education

North-West University (NWU) academics Prof Babs Surujlal, executive dean of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, and Prof Ephrem Redda, from the School of Management Sciences, recently participated in the 6th InterUni 2023 Forum of Internationalisation of Higher Education, organised by the WSB University in Poland.

The forum brought together participants from universities across the globe, representing a diverse and international spectrum of academic institutions.
