The North-West University (NWU) has secured fourth place in the Sustainable Development Goals Initiative of the Year category of the 2023 Global Triple E Awards for Africa.
These awards – made by the Accreditation Council for Entrepreneurial and Engaged Universities (ACEEU) – recognise universities worldwide that exhibit an exceptional commitment to entrepreneurship and community engagement in higher education.

This well-deserved recognition is thanks to the Unit for Environmental Sciences and Management (UESM’s) endeavours in their Smallholder Farmer Development Initiative.

Prof Toyin Omoyeni Falola, a renowned Nigerian historian and professor of African studies and current holder of the Jacob and Frances Sanger Mossiker Chair in the Humanities at the University of Texas at Austin, has generously donated 27 books to the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus library on 1 August 2023.

Twelve of these books have been either personally authored, co-authored or edited by Prof Falola himself. These works cover various subjects, including history, politics, philosophy and decolonisation.

Badminton boffin Jarred Elliott, a 23-year-old second-year student in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the North-West University (NWU), will represent the NWU and South Africa at the upcoming International University Sports Federation (FISU) Summer World University Games in China.

Recognising the immense responsibility that comes with this honour, Jarred, alongside the other members of the South African contingent, is diligently preparing for the upcoming games.

The North-West University (NWU) hosted its inaugural Vice-Chancellor’s Science Day on 31 July 2023 at Mabeskraal near Rustenburg as part of National Science Week.

The Walking in Victory Movement, the Christian student chapter on the North-West University's (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus, recently launched its #CleanUpVaal campaign.

Research professor Howard Chitimira and postdoctoral research fellow Dr Elfas Torerai, both from the North-West University's (NWU’s) Faculty of Law, presented papers at the 18th International Association of Consumer Law (IACL) Conference that took place from 19 to 21 July in Hamburg, Germany.

Their session focused on the African perspectives on financial consumer protection.

Prof Chitimira’s paper was titled “The role of financial education in the promotion of protection for poor consumers of digital financial services in Zimbabwe”.

In a thrilling first-round match of the Varsity Football tournament, the North-West University (NWU) and the University of Johannesburg (UJ) showcased their prowess on the pitch, ultimately sharing the spoils in an intense 0-0 draw.

The highly anticipated clash took place on Thursday, 27 July at the NWU Mahikeng stadium, where both teams were determined to kick off their campaign with a victory.

Jabulani Timothy Ncube, a North-West University (NWU) alumnus, and current student Obriel Takunda Maposa are gearing up for an exciting journey to Chengdu, China.

They will form part of the South African media team for the 32nd edition of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) Summer World University Games.

The event, set to take place from 28 July to 8 August 2023, will see more than 8 000 athletes from more than 150 countries competing in 18 different sporting codes.

On 20 July 2023, the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus hosted the "Facing Race Week" event to promote meaningful conversations about racial equality and understanding.

Professor Robert Balfour, the deputy vice-chancellor for teaching and learning, was the driving force behind this transformative week at the university. His speech sought to challenge prevalent viewpoints, bridge divides, and ignite a collective commitment to constructing a more inclusive and equitable society.
