Promoting indigenous African languages as a medium of instruction is imperative if we want to preserve our cultural heritage, improve learning outcomes and reduce language barriers. This was again evident during the 2023 BAQONDE congress, which was held at the North-West University (NWU) from 1 to 5 May.

On 5 May 2023 students from the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus showed their hearts are in the right place when they reached out to help fellow students in need with their Feed a Student campaign.
The food was donated to a Meal-A-Day project.
This campaign supplements the Meal-A-Day project run across all three of the NWU’s campuses, which gives needy students a month’s supply of essentials, including clothing and toiletries sponsored by Tiger Brands.
The North-West University (NWU) Alumni Office in partnership with the Career Centre hosted a Career Empowerment seminar on 19 April at the Vanderbijlpark Campus.
The event was well-attended and provided valuable information and resources to alumni seeking advice on their career paths.

Khayakazi Madlala, a final-year BA in music and society student at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) School of Music and Conservatory, was part of the stellar ensemble that performed at the famous Playhouse Theatre in Durban on 26 March 2023.
Giving up has never been an option for 23-year-old René Engelbrecht, who recently graduated with her BEd Foundation Phase degree at the North-West University (NWU). She obtained her degree with cum laude.
In a fitting acknowledgement to the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Ikateleng project’s 35 years of dedication to improving education and lives, the university recently welcomed 132 Ikateleng beneficiaries as first-year students across its three campuses in Mahikeng, Potchefstroom and Vanderbijlpark.
Ikateleng, which means empower yourself, is a flagship project that support school children from disadvantaged backgrounds in Grade 10 to 12. It provides supplementary teaching in mathematics, economics, business studies, accounting, life science, physical science, and English.
Kurt Naicker, a senior lecturer and chartered accountant at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) School of Accounting Sciences, recently presented the first virtual annual Kahoot Higher Ed Meetup and 10-year celebration of bringing awesomeness to classrooms worldwide.
Kahoot is a tool that can be used to engage students in the learning process by using gamification techniques. It is an online game-based learning platform that allows educators to create and share interactive quizzes, surveys, and discussions with their students.
The NWU Serenaders, the celebrated choir group from the North-West University, are excited to announce their upcoming concert at the Totius Hall on the 13th of May 2023. The event promises to be an unforgettable evening of beautiful music featuring works from Handel, Rutter, Mendelssohn, and traditional spirituals.
The rise in the annual consumer price inflation from 7,0% to 7,1% in March was contrary to market expectations, which had been that the consumer price index (CPI) might by now have shown a modest decline to about 6,7%.
According to Prof Raymond Parsons, economist from the North-West University (NWU) Business School, food prices are the main culprit. “The rate of inflation at 7,1% therefore remains well above the target range of 3% to 6% of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB).”
