The saying goes that two heads are better than one, and a strategic sport partnership between the North-West University’s (NWU’s) campuses in Potchefstroom and Vanderbijlpark bears testament to this.

Many karateka dream of it but very few ever have the opportunity to visit the Land of the Rising Sun. Stephen Moeketsi, a final-year BEd student of the North-West University (NWU) is one of the lucky few who gets to visit the home of karate: Japan.

“We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone”. These wise words by former American president Ronald Reagan were befitting during the annual Canned Food Day event that recently took place on the North West University’s campus in Potchefstroom.

“Violence is a huge problem within our society. It doesn’t only come with physical and emotional cost, but also with an economic cost. People who have experienced violence have higher incidences of illness and early death and can therefore not contribute to the economy in the long run.”

A much welcome result of the #FeesMustFall movement is that over the next three years, the South African government spending framework has made provision for the allocation of R57 billion towards fee-free higher education and training. However – according to Prof Ilyayambwa Mwanawina, associate professor at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Faculty of Law, there is still a lot of groundwork to be done.
