NWU introduces new sport for visually impaired students

The North-West University (NWU) has included goalball – a sport specifically played by visually impaired people – in its 2022 sporting codes.

On 25 February the South African National goalball champions team played a demonstration game on the NWU’s Mahikeng Campus to introduce the sport to students.

According to Jim Molautsi, director of Student Life, one of the department’s goals is to create a culture that celebrates diversity and enhances social cohesion.

Top Ikateleng learners receive laptops

With the world still facing the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the NWU and its loyal donors came together to make life a little easier for a group of talented, hard-working students.

To assist our students with their studies, PPS handed over laptops to the value of R200 000 to last year’s top Ikateleng-learners who are now registered across the NWU’s three campuses.

NWU and ACSR celebrate Mother Language Day 

On 24 February 2022 the North-West University’s (NWU’s) School of Languages, in collaboration with the North West Provincial Department of Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation (ACSR), hosted an event on its Mahikeng Campus to celebrate of International Mother Language Day.

Keynote speaker at the event, ACSR MEC Galebekwe Tlhapi, said mother tongue education in South Africa remains a major issue that the nation should discuss.

NWU nursing students to take part in national WorldSkills competition

Two nursing students from the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus, Sakhile Ngcobo and Tshiamo Mokgoetsi, have been selected to take part in the Health and Social Care skill category of the WorldSkills South Africa national competition on 28 March 2022.

They will be competing for the chance to represent South Africa at the 46th International WorldSkills Competition which will be held from 12-17 October 2022 in Shanghai, China.

NWU hosts SASCOC indaba

The North-West University (NWU) hosted the SASCOCHigh Performance Indaba at the Sports Village between 9 and 11 February 2022. SASCOC used this strategic planning session to review the performance of the Olympic and other elite teams over the past five years, and finalise a strategic plan for the next few Olympic cycles.

The North-West University (NWU) today held a successful media networking session to update members of the media fraternity on progress on the commencement of its 2022 academic year.

The institution hosted its official academic opening on Friday, 18 February, while classes commenced this week on Monday, 21 February.

Maximising educational success with Tiger Brands’ Plates4Days

The North-West University (NWU), in conjunction with Tiger Brands’ Plates4Days, launched the 2022 Meal-a-Day programme at its Mahikeng Campus on 22 February.

The Tiger Brands’ Plates4Days programme offers nutritional support for students who do not have access to proper meals. Qualifying students are provided with a nutritious meal each day, allowing them to better focus on their academic success.

More than 500 first-year students on the campus were introduced to the programme during the NWU’s Registration and Orientation week.
