NWU staff continue to make significant contributions, not only locally but also internationally. The executive dean of the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, Prof David Modise, has been appointed to the interim governing council of the African Network of Scientific and Technological Institutions (ANSTI).
Prof Modise will serve as a member of this council for two years, effective from 1 March 2023.
ANSTI was founded in 1980 with financial support from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the German government. It embraces African institutions that cooperate and are engaged in university-level training and research in the fields of science and technology.
Prof Eddie Mwenje, chairperson of the ANSTI interim governing council, says this council plays a strategic role in the governance, administration and management of ANSTI activities.
At its peak, membership included about 200 institutions in 40 sub-Saharan African countries. One of the functions of the interim governing council will be to revive ANSTI membership, and subsequently appoint a substantive governing council.
