Music students depart on exchange programme to Sweden

Four music students from the North-West University (NWU) recently departed for a five-month study trip to Stockholm in Sweden.

This is part of the Linnaeus-Palme Exchange Programme funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), with additional funding from the Hillensberg Trust.

This is the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 that NWU students were able to travel and take part in the exchange programme.

Continuation of interest-rate-raising cycle was inevitable

The statement by the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) on 22 September conveyed an understandably hawkish message about the inflation outlook in the economy in the midst of several global and domestic uncertainties.

Prof Raymond Parsons, economist from the Business School of the North-West University (NWU), says the majority view was for a 75 basis-point rise in order to progressively re-anchor inflationary expectations. Significantly, two members of the five-person MPC wanted a 100 basis-point hike.

NWU Eagles keep soaring

The saying goes - cherish the moment, live your dream and play netball. This is precisely what the NWU Eagles netball team is doing.  

They are off to a strong start in the 2022 Varsity Netball campaign by winning all three of their games. 

On Monday, 19 September, bragging rights went to the NWU Eagles yet again, when they defeated the Nelson Mandela University Madibaz by 84-50. 

The NWU Eagles now occupy the first position on the overall log with 15 points.

Further information regarding the handling of an alleged incident related to a female residence on the Potchefstroom Campus

The North-West University (NWU) management is seriously concerned about the allegations which surfaced over the past weekend about the programme proceedings of a residence event on the Potchefstroom Campus. The programme allegedly excluded some students from participating and feeling welcome at the event.

As part of demonstrating our commitment to transform and position the NWU as a unitary institution of superior academic excellence, with a commitment to social justice, the NWU Council has established the NWU Public Artwork Selection Committee (NWU PASC) to embark upon a process to find a new unitary symbol in the form of creative artwork.

NWU’s Prof Serena Lucrezi and her team scuba dive into research

Although the words ‘charisma’ and ‘sharks’ are not often used in the same sentence, Prof Serena Lucrezi believes that the charisma of sharks can be the centre of attraction for shark tourism.

That is indeed the focus of project “Brand South Africa” she and her research team from the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at the North-West University (NWU) recently launched.

Dr Bismark Tyobeka on South Africa’s nuclear future

The nuclear debate has raged for more than three quarters of a century. Proponents of nuclear power continue to extol its virtues, while its detractors remain steadfast in their belief that its risks outweigh its benefits. Renowned nuclear energy expert and vice-chancellor of the North-West University (NWU), Dr Bismark Tyobeka, was recently nominated to serve as South Africa’s representative on the Senior Industry Advisory Panel (SIAP) of the Generation IV International Forum (GIF).

Dr Tyobeka gives his thoughts on what the future holds for nuclear energy.

Celebrating cultural diversity, broadening horizons, and strengthening respect for each other through multilingualism
