The NWU is ready for the Varsity Football tournament

Caretaker coach Amos Xabanisa is brimming with confidence that the North-West University (NWU) football team is fully prepared to take on the challenges that lie ahead in the upcoming Varsity Football tournament.

In their bid to gauge their readiness, the team has engaged in a series of friendly matches. The NWU faced tough opponents, including Tuks FC, the Bafana Bafana team that recently participated in the Cosafa competition, and the SuperSport United FC MDC team.

Liezel adds new arrow to her athletics quiver

There was little doubt that she would be able to do it. Scratch that – less than a little, but just more than none. Liezel Gouws says that perhaps she would not have ended on the podium in the long-jump event at the recent Para Athletics World Championships, but a top position was definitely booked for her.

“I started with long jump only recently, but unfortunately I could not participate in it in Paris. However, I do believe that I could have ended among the top four,” the 25-year-old student from the North-West University says.

NWU’s Rugby Institute remains factory for provinces

The Rugby Institute of the North-West University (NWU) has again proven itself to be one of the country’s foremost player factories, with no fewer than six players from the NWU Eagles’ Varsity Cup-winning squad having secured provincial contracts.

These players have also obtained or are in the process of completing their respective academic degrees from the NWU, thereby yet again underlining the NWU’s commitment to providing well-rounded athletes with a future beyond the sports fields.

Structural solutions lie beyond monetary policy

As was widely anticipated, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decided by a 3:2 majority to keep interest rates on hold for now, instead of opting for a further increase of 25 basis points.

In commenting on the MPC’s decision on 20 July, Prof Raymond Parsons, economist from the Business School at the North-West University (NWU), says it was the right call by the MPC, given the latest global and domestic economic cross-currents, as well as the cumulative impact of previous rate hikes on the economy.

Local researcher to collaborate with Cambridge University

The North-West University (NWU) takes pride in the calibre of its academics. The expert work of the NWU’s researchers and lecturers is often recognised internationally, resulting in opportunities to collaborate with some of the most renowned and highest-ranking universities in the world.

Prof Paul Smit, associate professor of and programme leader for Labour Relations Management at the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, has been invited to collaborate as a visiting fellow with the Centre for Business Research (CBR) at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom.

Another accreditation accolade for the NWU’s School of Accounting Sciences

The School of Accounting Sciences at the North-West University (NWU) has once again distinguished itself as an indisputable leader in its field with the recent announcement by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) that the school’s Bachelor of Commerce in Financial Accountancy has been accredited for the purposes of SAICA’s Associate General Accountant [AGA(SA)] designation.

NWU psychologist to accompany SA team to World Games

Prof Ankebé Kruger from the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Faculty of Health Sciences has been appointed as psychologist for the South African student team taking part in the World Student Games in Chengdu, China from 28 July to 8 August 2023.

The event marks the 32nd edition of the Summer World University Games, with approximately 8 000 athletes from more than 150 countries expected to compete in 18 different sport codes.

Jenique’s generosity brings joy to her feline friends

Jenique Botha, a compassionate and dedicated 20-year-old student from the North-West University (NWU), recently made a heart-warming gesture by donating cat food at the Cat Shack and Edenvale Ferals.

Known for its exceptional boarding services for cats when their owners are away, the Cat Shack goes above and beyond by actively participating in cat and kitten rescue and rehoming within the community.
