The North-West University's (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus has successfully concluded its "Hang a Hug" initiative in honour of Mandela Day.
During the campaign, students and staff donated jackets and hung them on designated trees around the campus for those in need during the cold winter months. The initiative managed to collect more than 150 jackets.
The campaign was initiated by the Student Campus Council (SCC) and Prof Linda du Plessis, deputy vice-chancellor for planning and Vanderbijlpark Campus operations. It was launched in June and was inspired by an initiative called "Baadjies aan bome", which translates to "Jackets on trees".
Prof Du Plessis expressed her joy for the overwhelming support the initiative received.
"It's heartwarming to see such a positive response from the university community, and it's a testament to the spirit of giving that Mandela Day represents. Together, we can make a difference and spread joy and warmth to those in need. The ‘Hang a Hug’ initiative is a great example of how small acts of kindness can make a big impact," she added.
Dr Sean McCallaghan, director for student life, also expressed his appreciation for students and staff’s valuable contributions. He announced that some of the jackets will be given to needy students, and a significant portion will be donated to a charitable organisation. He added that the campus intends to carry out similar initiatives throughout the year.
"Seeing how a simple idea can bring people together and make a positive change was inspiring. It's important to remember that we all have the power to make a difference, no matter how big or small our actions may seem. Overall, the success of the ‘Hang a Hug’ initiative is a reminder to us all that we can make a difference in the world," said- Dr McCallaghan.
