Students and academic to show their mettle in China

Dr Japie Greeff, deputy director of the School of Computer Science and Information Systems at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus, will be leading four NWU students to take part in a BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) initiative in China.

The students will take part in two skills competitions and Dr Greeff will be one of the judges.

The first competition will focus on data analysis and visualisation, and the second on machine learning and big data.

Students excel at annual Geekulcha Hackathon

The Geekulcha student chapter on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus recently participated in the annual Geekulcha Hackathon at UNISA’s Pretoria Campus, and two teams – Code Blooded and What’s next – made it into the top 10.

The annual hackathon challenges developers, digital practitioners, data enthusiasts, economic policymakers, and others to create solutions that help Africa to define and live up to the next African Digital Narrative and make people’s lives easier through technology.

Vanderbijlpark Campus bids farewell to Dr Sean McCallaghan

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus recently bid farewell to director for student life Dr Sean McCallaghan after being with the institution for 15 years as a student and staff member.

Dr McCallaghan, who is leaving for New Zealand, was commended for his exceptional leadership, mentorship and student support at an event attended by his wife, two children, staff and students.

He said it is not easy for him to say goodbye.

NWU and GCRA partner to train unemployed youth in solar technology

The North-West University’s (NWU's) Unit for Continuing Education partnered with the Gauteng City Region Academy (GCRA) to launch a solar technician training programme.

Taking place on the Vanderbijlpark Campus, this four-week programme aims to empower young and unemployed individuals. It equips them with work readiness skills, technical expertise, and hands-on experience regarding installing, maintaining and troubleshooting solar panels.

Vanderbijlpark Campus bodybuilding team excels

The bodybuilding team on the North-West University’s (NWU's) Vanderbijlpark Campus has again brought home significant wins. The team recently participated in the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) National Championships in Emalahleni, Mpumalanga, and emerged victorious in several categories.

Mandlakayise Jonga was named the overall winner in the Senior Men's Physique category, while Moses Paneng took third place and Mthokozisi Zuma sixth place. Ayanda Piyo emerged as the winner in the Senior Man Classic Physique category.

Statistics lecturer dedicates his new book to the underdogs

Dr Piet Ntema, a statistics lecturer on the North-West University's (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus, has authored a new book to inspire individuals who have encountered obstacles and setbacks in their lives.

Titled The Sunrise Of The Underdogs, Dr Ntema says the book is dedicated to all those who have been counted out, underestimated and told that their dreams were beyond reach.

NWU hosts successful GBV campaign

The North-West University (NWU) Vanderbijlpark Campus recently hosted a massively successful Gender Based Violence (GBV) campaign at the student centre.
The GBV awareness campaign addressed high incidents of rape to help reduce sexual violence at the North-West University (NWU) Vanderbijlpark Campus and community to improve students understanding of consent.

Noord-Vaal Cross Country competition broadens its horizons

On Saturday 26 August, talented athletes from 40 secondary and six primary schools participated in the Noord-Vaal Cross Country competition hosted by the North-West University's (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus and Hoërskool DR Malan in Meyerton.

The event brought together talented athletes from Vanderbijlpark, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Meyerton and Potchefstroom.

Taking place along the picturesque banks of the Vaal River, participants immersed themselves in the stunning surroundings as they navigated the cross-country course.
