A season of sharing: NWU supports a Christmas celebration for less fortunate children

Representatives of the North-West University (NWU) supported the Christmas party for underprivileged children hosted by the South African Police Service (SAPS) at the School of Artillery, Klipdrift Military Base on Saturday, 2 December 2023.

Among the distinguished guests were Brigadier Steven Moodley, station commander at the SAPS Potchefstroom, and Colonel Des Ayob, director of Protection Services at the NWU. Mrs Lizelle le Roux, from the office of the deputy-vice chancellor for Information Technology (IT) and Potchefstroom Campus Operations, was the other guest.

Toys donated by NWU staff members were delivered to the SAPS Potchefstroom offices by Colonel Des Ayob and Mrs Lizelle le Roux on Friday, 1 December.

The youngsters, dressed in red and white, were treated to a cheerful puppet show that explained the significance of Christmas. Following the performance, the children received treats ranging from sweets, cookies and soft drinks to toys.

Vincent Eastes, project and office manager at the office of Prof Daryl Balia, deputy-vice chancellor for Information Technology and Potchefstroom Campus Operations, says the NWU’s involvement in community engagement will allow the university to fulfil its broader societal role and contribute to the well-being of the Potchefstroom community.

Vincent says that, in order to increase the number of donations of toys from the NWU staff, the institution’s social media channels will be utilised to raise awareness for upcoming initiatives.

A fruitful occasion and a happy moment for the less fortunate. It is remarkable how a toy can brighten a youngster’s day.
