Ranking places NWU among top six local universities for second consecutive year

The THE World University Rankings have again, like in last year’s ranking, placed the North-West University (NWU) among the top six universities in South Africa. Globally, the NWU is ranked between 501 and 600 out of more than 1 600 universities across 99 countries and regions that were evaluated for the 2022 rankings.

The latest rankings of world universities by Times Higher Education (THE) reaffirms the NWU’s consistent performance in international rankings.

The THE announced its rankings for 2022 on Thursday, 2 September. It is only the third year that the NWU has participated in the THE World University Rankings.

The THE World University Rankings are considered to be the largest and most diverse university rankings to date. They consider research-intensive universities across all their core missions, which include teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

According to the THE, it uses 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons that are trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry and governments.

The latest ranking by the THE World University Rankings follows on the heels of an overall fifth-place ranking in South Africa in the 2021 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).

Prof Dan Kgwadi, vice-chancellor and principal of the NWU, emphasises that the NWU’s achievements in the rankings contribute to the NWU’s dream to be an internationally recognised university in Africa and the world, distinguished for engaged scholarship, social responsiveness and an ethic of care.

He says the future of postgraduate studies and research will be driven by transdisciplinary research, partnerships, collaboration and networks.

“We are pleased with our overall performance in research and teaching-learning.  We can see the results of the implementation of our strategy, for which our staff in both academic and support areas have invested their time and expertise.”
