NWU’s newest ambassadors have landed

On 8 February 2025, the North-West University (NWU) rolled out the purple carpet for its newest ambassadors across all three campuses, welcoming about 13 000 first years to the NWU family. The official welcome unfolded on the Vanderbijlpark Campus, with a live broadcast to the Potchefstroom and Mahikeng campuses.

With several dignitaries, including Council members, senior management and student leadership, in attendance, the event was more than just an introduction – it was a promise of great things to come. It highlighted new beginnings, the limitless possibilities ahead and a new era of NWU greatness.

Taking centre stage, Prof Mzubanzi Bismark Tyobeka, principal and vice-chancellor, welcomed the first-year students with open arms and congratulated them on securing a place at the NWU.

“Today marks the beginning of your incredible journey. You are now part of a vibrant, diverse and inclusive community that is committed to excellence.” Prof Tyobeka further encouraged the students to take full advantage of what the NWU has to offer.

“Your time here will be transformative, you will engage with world-class academics, immerse yourself in cutting-edge research, and be challenged to think critically. Join student structures and societies, try a new sport, participate in cultural activities, and – most importantly – step out of your comfort zone. It all starts here, but where it ends is entirely up to you.”

Kamohelo Zwane, president of the Student Representative Council (SRC), challenged the first years to leave their mark by making a meaningful difference at the NWU and leaving the institution better than they found it.

Prof Sibusiso Chalufu, executive director of Student Life and acting deputy vice-chancellor for the Vanderbijlpark Campus, highlighted that choosing the NWU was one of the best decisions the students had made.

“You have come to the world of champions. Our vibrant student life is what defines who we are. We are committed to ensuring your holistic development and providing you with a rich student experience through a variety of co-curricular programmes and activities that are our game.”

Meanwhile, on the Potchefstroom Campus, Dr Corrie Rheeder, director of Student Life, celebrated the arrival of the first years and reassured them that they were not alone. “The NWU is more than just a university – it is a home where we all support and uplift one another,” she said.

Prof Daryl Balia, deputy vice-chancellor for Information Technology and Campus Operations (Potchefstroom Campus) added to the enthusiasm by encouraging the first years to embrace this new chapter.

Over at the Mahikeng Campus, the deputy-vice chancellor for Community Engagement and Campus Operations (Mahikeng Campus), Prof Sonia Swanepoel, delivered a lively and interactive address, incorporating a quiz element, rewarding those who provided the correct answers with corporate gifts. This approach set the tone for the academic year ahead.

The festivities did not stop there. Throughout the ceremony, attendees across all the campuses were treated to fascinating performances by various choirs. With harmonies filling the air, the audiences dancing and cheering, the events were electrifying. To top it all off, the first years were graced by the presence of the university’s beloved mascot, Eagi, who sealed the deal on a day to remember.

Lots of purple pride, new faces, and new dreams. This is where it all begins. Welcome to the NWU!
