During the recent Gauteng Championships that was hosted in Randburg, the team from Vanderbijlpark not only made their presence felt, but also walked away triumphant in several divisions.
Leading by example was coach Joseph Matlhong who, together with Sebolelo Motlhabi, earned provincial colours in Morabaraba. Karabo Mosimane earned her provincial colours in Checkers after a sterling performance.
Team mates Samson Thinane and Thabo Kgopane both came up tops in Checkers while Boipelo Ntladi took third place.
In the Fifa 19 Challenge, the NWU’s Lindokuhle Sithole, Mduduzi Msiza, Lehlogonolo Metsie dominated the competition and made a clean sweep by finishing first, second and third respectively. The Tekken 7 Challenge saw Mhlengi Nkosi taking the third spot. Mhlengi still has two championships to compete in before qualifying for his national colours.
Mind sports as a competitive sporting code
The campus joined Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) in 2017, and since then the sport has grown in leaps and bounds. In fact, it took the campus less than 24 months to enjoy national acclaim.
The club boasts more than 100 members who take part in two main disciplines: board games (such as Morabaraba, card games and war games) and eSport. The latter refers to all computer or digitally based games, such as Fifa 19, Tekken 7, League of Legends, Counter Strike and robotics.
Since the inception of mind sports on the campus, the popularity of the sport has increased beyond expectation. The club’s members are made up of staff and students.
