NWU Vaal and KFC Mini Cricket Festival: little cricketers, big aspirations!

When it comes to young cricket talent, the Vanderbijlpark region is well on its way to produce the next AB de Villiers, JP Duminy and Kagiso Rabada.  This was evident during the recent KFC Mini Cricket Festival that was hosted at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) campus in Vanderbijlpark.

The event saw 590 youngsters (representative of 20 schools in the region), showing off their skills with bat and ball.

According to Dr Anita Lennox, one of the organisers and a lecturer in the School of Management Sciences, the annual event provides a fun and non-competitive platform from where young children not only learn new cricket skills but also enjoy the benefits associated with team sports. These benefits include the development of leadership skills, regular physical exercise, building self-esteem and learning to work well with others.

The festival was organised by the subject group Sport Management in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, in collaboration with KFC and Cricket South Africa. The 2019 rendition was furthermore sponsored by Colefax Trading (Pty) Ltd – a franchisee of the KFC Corporation, KFC Vanderbijlpark SW5, KFC Vanderbijlpark CBD, KFC Vaal Mall, KFC Three Rivers, KFC Vereeniging 1 and KFC Arcon Park.  The Central Gauteng Lions also supported the event.

This was the sixth time that the campus hosted this popular event. The KFC Mini Cricket initiative was started in 1983 to introduce boys and girls to the game of cricket and ignite a passion for one of South Africa’s most-loved sports.

The organisers of the event were, from left: Fanie Roos, Dr Anita Lennox, Koos de Villiers (Master of Ceremonies) and Dr Liandi van den Berg. Absent: Jackie Bonnema.

More than 590 youngsters took part in the 2019 rendition of the festival.
