NWU plays host to elite hockey tournament

The North-West University (NWU) is continuing to strive to promote the wonderful sport that is hockey by hosting the Men’s FIH Pro League in Potchefstroom.

The tournament kicks off on Tuesday, 8 February, when South Africa takes on the Netherlands, with the other participating teams being France, India and Germany.

“It is a great opportunity for South Africa to play against some of the world’s best teams. The event allows for the world’s top eight teams to compete, and we have been awarded the opportunity to host the event due to our ranking and some teams having had to withdraw due to Covid-related matters,” says Sheldon Rostron, local organising committee chairman and Director: Sport at the NWU.

“This event further allows the South African team to participate in a relatively full schedule in 2022. That is something we have been dreaming of for quite some time. The event will also serve the South African team well in the lead-up to the Commonwealth Games and the World Cup that will be staged later this year. We are really fortunate to be part of this process,” says Rostron.
