NWU alumna to host first-ever Science behind Sport Day

“Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks in a language everyone understands. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair.”

These powerful words by the late President Nelson Mandela still rings true today and represents the cornerstone of Lerato Maqena’s professional ethos as a qualified sport scientist. Lerato, an alumna of the North-West University’s (NWU’s) campus in Vanderbijlpark, heads-up the Qena Sports Science Academy as a professional consultant.

Through the academy, Lerato assists clients (which include several high-profile sport clubs), to improve their physical performance and to strengthen their psychological prowess. “Sport represents a high-impact tool for development and continuous to be a powerful agent for social change,” says Lerato and adds that with this in mind she will be hosting the first-ever Science behind Sport Day on 29 July 2017 at her alma mater.

By championing this initiative Lerato wishes to expose students within the fields of Sport Science and Sport Management to industry experts and to create a platform from where students and sporting professionals can network.
