As one of South Africa’s top-ranked female hammer throwers, she will soon have the opportunity to prove her mettle against the world’s best when she takes part in the World Student Games and the African Games respectively.
The first stop on her international journey will be Napoli, Italy. The World Student Games – also known as Summer Universiade – will take place from 3 to 14 June 2019. During this competition more than 9 300 athletes will compete in 18 different sporting codes.
Just more than a month later, Marga will pack her bags to compete in the African Games set to take place in Rabat, Morocco. This year 53 nations will be participating in the event that will take place from 19 to 31 August 2019.
According to Marga, her inclusion in both these national teams follows her feat of achieving a distance farther than 60 meters. “Apart from me exceeding the 60-meter mark, I also believe that my technique – as honed by my coach and hammer throw legend, Chris Harmse – contributed to my inclusion in the teams,” says Marga.
She says that she is mentally and physically in the “right space” to perform internationally, and that 2019 is proving to be a very good year for her.
Marga says she is at her happiest when she steps into the hammer throw circle. “When I am in the circle, I get to focus and for a moment forget about life and its challenges.”
Marga boasts a personal best distance of 61,27 meters.
More about Marga
Hailing from Middelburg in the Eastern Cape, Marga joined her brother, Alan (23), in Vanderbijlpark to further her sporting career.
Interestingly enough, her brother is also a hammer thrower of note and will join her in the South African student team.
