Mother-daughter duo ready for academic year

They may be years apart, but mother and daughter share the same goal: to successfully complete their respective postgraduate qualifications during the 2020 academic year.

This year saw Fatima De Abreu and her daughter, Michaela Raymakers, both fall in line to register at the North-West University (NWU).

Although it is the first time that mother and daughter will both spend time behind the books at the same time, Fatima and Michaela are no strangers to the NWU – both being proud alumni.

Fatima lectures physical sciences at the NWU’s campus in Vanderbijlpark and is registered for a doctoral degree in chemistry at the Potchefstroom Campus. Michaela – who graduated with a BA degree in 2019 – will be expanding her skills by venturing into computer game design and development in Vanderbijlpark.

Both mother and daughter believe in the power of education and are keen to keep learning and broaden their horizons. Fatima laughs and says that although they share different passions, she can see them working together in the future. “Perhaps one day we might collaborate on a sci-fi game or create an educational chemistry app!”
