Nicknames can be cruel, but in the case of Thato “Prof” Louw it is most definitely an indication of a bright future.

For 24-year old Thato – a third-year BSc financial mathematics student at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) campus in Vanderbijlpark – his nickname reveals not only his knack for numbers, but also his passion for education.

Thato started the year on a high note when he successfully contributed towards the compilation and publishing of two academic study guides for grade 12 learners in Mathematics and Physical Sciences.

This is no mean feat and asked what motivated him undertake this mammoth project, he answers that he wishes to share his passion for education with upcoming generations. “I discovered my love for mathematics and science while at high school, and I believe that through the power of education young minds can similarly be opened to fully grasp these necessary but challenging subjects,” says Thato.

This former learner from the Thuto Lore Comprehensive School’s journey as an educator and mentor started when he was just 16 years old and helping his classmates to better understand mathematics.

Today he assists youngsters in his community who struggle with mathematics and he also boasts with a YouTube channel called: Edification Renders TV, which he uses to explain mathematical problems and concepts to a wider audience.

“I believe that everybody has the potential to do well in mathematics,” says Thato and explains that nothing in life is ever too difficult if you put your mind to it. “Mathematics is not just about numbers, but also about problem solving skills which you can apply to real life situations.”

And what is next for Thato? “I dream of establishing my own private school, a learning channel on television and that my study guides become official study material for all grade 12 learners. Until then, I will continue to believe in the power of education and do my best to make mathematics accessible for all.”
