On Saturday, 28 September, more than 150 members of this alumni fraternity converged on their alma mater for yet another memorable get-together.
This year marked the eighth rendition of the homecoming and according to Innocentia Pitso, who heads-up the fraternity’s executive committee, this year exceeded all expectations. The jam-packed programme included indigenous games, a fun run and the customary picnic on the lush green banks of the Vaal River.
Innocentia explains that the annual Homecoming is based on the pay-it-forward philosophy. Since the participating alumni have received so much – both in formal and informal education during their time at the campus – they naturally want others to reap the same rewards as they did.
Since the formal inception of the event back in 2015, this alumni chapter has raised close to R50 000 to assist current students by means of the campus’ Feather Fund.
According to Zanele Ngobese, alumni coordinator, the continued support of the chapter contributes immensely towards the vesting of a culture of alumni giving. It also bears testament to the NWU’s brand attributes of social justice and an ethic of care.
“We all want to make the world a better place,” Zanele says and adds that alumni, by sharing their time, talent and resources, literally pays it forward for other students. “I applaud this group of young alumni for stepping up and changing the lives of deserving students by enabling them to receive their university education.”
The executive committee of the chapter was responsible for arranging the event and comprises of the following alumni members:
- Innocentia Pitso
- Morena Tsotetsi
- Lerato Mofokeng
- Moeketsi Tebakang
- Tears Makgale
- Akona Dalasile
- Hloni Moheta
Alumni from across the country supported the annual Homecoming.
Zenzile Rens, Morena Tsotetsi and Nosi Joseph Mbele have been friends since their student days on the NWU’s campus in Vanderbijlpark.
