Free and equal: a campus conversation about human rights

Human Rights Month is commemorated in March to remind South Africans about the sacrifices that accompanied the struggle for the attainment of democracy in South Africa.

In light hereof, the North-West University (NWU), in collaboration with the office of the speaker of the Sedibeng District Municipality and the Ministry for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, will collaborate to host an event to facilitate debate around the human rights agenda in South Africa.

According to Jacob Simango, director for student life on the campus in Vanderbijlpark, the event lends itself to the university’s commitment towards social justice, and as such the collaborative triad will set out to host an impactful event aimed at the campus’s student fraternity.

“The issue of human rights is not only opportune, but also appropriate given the time of year we find ourselves in,” says Jacob. He adds that more often than not discourse around human rights take place at a level that is divorced from the lived reality of many South Africans. Through the event, that will take place on 20 March, the organisers hope to dispel the latter.

George Ncebesha, a spokesperson from the office of the speaker of the Sedibeng District Municipality, says it is possible to explore synergies and possibilities for cooperation between different sectors of society through robust debate.

“It is important for us to engage with students as the leaders of tomorrow. Not only to listen to their experiences pertaining to human rights – be it positive or negative, but also to work together in promoting and protecting human rights through social justice, reconciliation and democratic ideals.
