Sias Hamman obtained the BPharm, MSc (Pharmaceutics) and PhD (Pharmaceutics) degrees from North-West University and is currently a Professor in Pharmaceutics at the School of Pharmacy at North-West University, South Africa. His research interests include nose-to-brain drug delivery, in vitro and ex vivo models to assess intranasal drug delivery, functional excipients, beneficial herb-drug interactions and biopharmaceutical aspects of natural compounds. He has published more than 100 articles in accredited, peer-reviewed scientific journals and supervised as well as co-supervised more than 20 PhD students and more than 70 MSc students. He holds a C2 rating from the NRF and has received research funding from the NRF and MRC. He has been invited to present plenary sessions at international conferences and received distinguished awards from the Academy of the Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa. His most significant research output has been on the enhancement of the delivery of phytochemical compounds to reach both the systemic circulation and brain as targets. Phytochemicals from medicinal plants that have been shown pharmacologically active in the brain against depression, anxiety, migraine and cognitive disorders have been successfully delivered across excised nasal respiratory and olfactory epithelial membranes. Furthermore, he is involved in the development of advanced in vitro-ex vivo combination models to predict drug absorption into the brain after intranasal administration.
