Professor Minja Gerber

Prof Minja Gerber is a full-time, NRF-rated (C2 - since 2019) researcher at Pharmacen™, NWU. She acts as Subprogramme leader: Drug Delivery; Chairperson of the Scientific Committee: Drug Delivery; Head: Cosmeceutical Research; Manager: Transdermal and Topical Drug Delivery Laboratories; Head: Pharmacen™ Skin Studies Services, and Internal facilitator: PG Dip (Cosmetic Product Formulation).

Prof Gerber is registered at the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC), she is an EXCO member of The South African Chapter of the Controlled Release Society (CRS) – representing Transdermal and Topical Drug Delivery in South Africa and the North-West University and a member of The Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa (PSSA); Society of Cosmetic Chemists South Africa (Coschem), Cosmetic, Toiletry & Fragrance Association of South Africa (CTFA) and The Society for Advanced Cell Culture Modelling for Africa (SACCMA). She also serves on the Faculty Board and the Research and Innovation Committee of Health Sciences, NWU.

Since 2006, she has mentored various postdoctoral fellows and postgraduate students (MSc and PhD). She is the author/co-author of numerous international publications and has presented her research at different scientific conferences, nationally and internationally. Prof Gerber regularly acts as reviewer for numerous internationally accredited journals and as external reviewer for grant proposals, nationally and internationally (i.e., Chile and France). She has received several research grants of which she was the principal investigator and completed a Sabbatical at the Division of Drug Delivery Technology, LACDR (Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research), Leiden University, The Netherlands under the guidance of Prof Joke Bouwstra in 2012.

Prof Gerber focusses on the development of novel research technologies in transdermal and topical drug delivery coupled with dermal toxicity, wound healing, and nano-drug delivery vehicles (i.e., nano-emulsions, nanoparticles, nano-emulgels, vesicles, etc.) for the topical application of different actives (pharmaceutical or cosmeceutical) to enhance percutaneous absorption and to assess delivery into and through the skin. She also investigates the release and delivery of actives with regards to the skin for the industry (pharmaceutical and cosmeceutical).
