Empowering the teachers of tomorrow

There are three types of teachers: the teacher who makes things happen, the teacher who watches others make it happen and the teacher who wonders what happened!

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) teachers of the future – who are training to be teachers who make things happen – recently hosted a seminar on education matters on the campus in Vanderbijlpark, and relaunched their student council.

The seminar hosted VIP’s representing various stakeholders from the education sector, each with a message of empowerment and encouragement to these students from the Faculty of Education.

Acting as programme director, fourth-year BEd student Sifiso Nhlapo, took attendees through the programme. The event kicked-off with Siphiwe Mbokane, education convenor for the south west region of the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union.

Siphiwe introduced the union as a partner of the Department of Basic Education in delivering quality education to all.

He encouraged students to become teachers who establish a safe classroom environment by involving learners in making class rules and getting involved in various initiatives in an effort to truly understand the issues children are facing.

Emma Welcome from the Gauteng Department of Basic Education (DBE) utilised the opportunity to discuss promotion and progression and the implementation of multiple education opportunities with National Senior Certificate candidates. She is revered for her work regarding curriculum and assessment policies.

The students also had the opportunity to listen to other representatives from the DBE, and enjoyed the soothing notes of singer Inge Kuhn as well as a motivational talk by alumnus Jerry Bangude. The day was concluded with a teambuilding session of interactive drumming by well-known Drum Café.
