Whatever happens at the NWU may have an influence on your qualification and therefore alumni, by means of membership to the Convocation, are empowered to have a say in university matters. By joining in the conversation, alumni therefore play an important role in ensuring that the quality and reputation of the university are upheld and strengthened.
In light of the aforementioned importance of the Convocation, the Alumni Office on the NWU’s campus in Vanderbijpark will be hosting its first Convocation Talk Breakfast on 21 July 2017. During the breakfast session – that will take place at Books & Beans (the on-campus coffee shop situated in Building 13) – membership to and the role of the Convocation will be discussed.
According to Zanele Ngobese, the campus’s Alumni Coordinator, the Convocation represents a statutory body of the university and it is therefore recognised in the university’s Statute as part of the formal governance framework. “Membership to the Convocation can only be obtained through a formal application and payment of the prescribed fee of R50,” explains Zanele and adds that it is a once-off application for lifelong membership.
he purpose of the Convocation is furthermore to promote the well-being of the NWU by safeguarding its image, traditions and interests and by serving as a bridge between members of the Convocation and the university. The Convocation is represented on the university Council and also works closely with other structures such as the Alumni Association that promotes interaction between the university and its alumni.
