On a cold and wet morning, Maggie Jasson and Florrie Makaku from the North-West University (NWU) hit the streets of Cape Town for the Totalsports Women's Race.  

North-West University (NWU) academic Prof Olubukola Oluranti Babalola and PhD student Sinenhlanhla Mthembu were recognised at the 2024 South African Women in Science Awards (SAWiSA) on 15 August in Mbombela. 

Prof Babalola was named the first runner-up in the Distinguished Women Research category, while Sinenhlanhla won the DSI Esther Mahlangu Doctoral Fellowship award. 

On 31 July and 1 and 2 August 2024, the Faculty of Law at the North-West University (NWU) hosted its annual Undergraduate Prestige Awards across the three university campuses. These awards celebrate the academic excellence and outstanding leadership of students, recognising their dedication to both scholarly pursuits and community service. 

Schistosomiasis, also known as bilharzia, is the second most socio-economically devastating parasitic disease after malaria, affecting millions of South Africans. Caused by parasitic worms which rely on specific snails as intermediate hosts, recent research has explored how climate change might impact the distribution of these snails, and, consequently, the spread of the disease.

The Goddess Night event hosted by the North-West University's (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus Arts Unit was truly a night to remember. The ladies went all out, and their stunning attire perfectly embodied the event's theme, "A Bridgerton Affair".

The event aimed to foster a spirit of sisterhood among the attendees, drawing inspiration from the popular series Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.

North-West University (NWU) PhD student Sinenhlanhla Mthembu has been chosen to participate in the Young Scientists Female Programme from 1 to 30 October 2024 at Okayama University in Japan.

The South African Nursing Council (SANC) recently visited the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus to conduct a re-accreditation review of the university's nursing programme, which was initiated in 2020.

Dr Rorisang Machailo, deputy director of the School of Nursing, explained that the visit was part of the SANC's ongoing monitoring and evaluation process.

"The SANC's mandate includes inspecting and investigating nursing education institutions and health establishments to ensure compliance with the Nursing Act 33 of 2005 and the standards set by the Council."

Showcasing her passion for legal education and human rights awareness across the continent, Dr Mahlatse Maake-Malatji, a senior lecturer in law at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus, served as a distinguished judge at the 33rd Christof Heyns African Moot Court Competition (CHAMCC).

This prestigious competition, co-hosted by the University of Pretoria and the University of Rwanda, was held in Kigali, Rwanda, from 22 to 28 July 2024.

Two stars from North-West University (NWU) have added their own sparkle to the Parisian skyline, joining the ranks of other greats in the city known for its lights. Jo-Ané van Dyk (javelin) and Bradley Nkoana (4x100 m) captured silver medals at the Paris Olympic Games and showed that greatness knows no geographical boundaries, but is defined by determination and skill.

NWU athletics manager at the Potchefstroom Campus, Wade Fraser, was very pleased with how both athletes performed.
