Two technology projects recently received honours at this year’s Innovation Hub GAP awards that were held on 10 December 2020.

A team of four third-year Industrial Engineering students, Hendrik Rossouw, Nondumiso Bhengu, Ryno Aust and Carolien Müller, have been invited to participate in the global qualification round (GQR) of the Inchainge Global Student Challenge 2020–2021.

Three North-West University (NWU) academics have been chosen for the South African Teaching Advancement at University (TAU) Fellowship Programme.

It is a great honour to be selected by the TAU panel and confirms that the NWU’s academics have a well-deserved reputation for their expertise, hard work and dedication.
The three lecturers who have done the NWU proud are two senior lecturers of the Faculty of Law, Dr Allison Geduld and Dr Kesolofetse Lefenya, and Dr Teresa Hattingh, a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering.

These are challenging times in which we need to empower learners for the “new normal” to study and work in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The Renewable Energy Postgraduate Symposium (REPS) is an annual event hosted by the Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies at Stellenbosch University for postgraduate students working in any of the fields of renewable and sustainable energy.

So says Meelan Roopa, lecturer in Business Engineering and Design in the Faculty of Engineering, sharing his story about teaching and learning during the lockdown period.

During the presentation of the budget vote of the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) in the National Assembly on 24 July 2020, the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Dr Blade Nzimande, highlighted a number of flagship projects, also those dealing with Covid-19 challenges, including projects in which Hydrogen South Africa (HySA) has been involved.

The Faculty of Engineering, in partnership with Dr Melinda du Toit from the Centre for Social Development in Africa (CSDA) at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), reached out to the Itsoseng Women’s Project in Drieziek extension, Orange Farm township to collaborate with members and leaders of the community to address challenges identified by the community.

The DST/NRF Research Chair in Biofuels received a poster award for a particularly valuable contribution to the hydrothermal liquefaction topic session at the 29th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition (e-EUBCE 2020).
