Alleged incident of violation of human rights

The North-West University (NWU) is aware of the incident that allegedly involved chanting and the infringement of other students’ rights at one of the student residences on the Potchefstroom Campus. It is alleged that the incident took place during the night of Thursday, 5 June 2025.

The NWU views the infringement or violation of human rights, policies, and rules in a serious light, and strongly condemns any actions or behaviour that seek to undermine its values.

Therefore, the university has commenced with the necessary investigation into the alleged incident.

Allegations of exclusion from the official welcoming event at the North-West University

On Saturday, 11 February 2023, allegations surfaced that first-year students from the town residences were excluded from the official welcoming event in the Amphitheatre on the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University (NWU). According to the allegations, the decision was due to the lack of diversity within these residences.

The North-West University mourns the passing of its student


The North-West University (NWU) is saddened by the passing of a 20-year-old student at the Mahikeng Campus in the afternoon of Tuesday, 26 July 2022. The student’s next of kin have been informed, and some family members have already been on the scene where they were accompanied by members of the South African Police Services (SAPS). Ms Mmathabo Cornelia Sesinyi, a first-year BA Communication student was a resident at the GaTholo off-campus residence. The SAPS have commenced with investigations and would be best suited to answer any questions regarding this tragic incident.

NWU deeply saddened by untimely passing on of its student, Onkgopotse Kgeletsane, at the Mahikeng Campus

The North-West University (NWU) community is deeply saddened by the death of 23-year-old, Onkgopotse Kgeletsane, who was found dead in his room in the James Moroka residence on the Mahikeng Campus on Sunday, 12 June 2022. Onkgopotse was a second-year student in Public Administration.
