NWU vice-chancellor extends warm welcome to 22nd SAUSSA Games participants

The vice-chancellor of the North-West University (NWU), Prof Bismark Tyobeka, extended a warm welcome to participants in the 22nd Southern African Universities Staff Sports Association (SAUSSA) Games at the NWU during the official opening that took place at the Great Hall on the Mahikeng Campus on 11 December 2023. The event, promoting sportsmanship and camaraderie, is set to take place from 11 to 15 December 2023, showcasing athletic prowess and fostering a sense of community among universities in the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Eight countries are taking part.

Real-time monitoring in occupational hygiene

On 29 and 30 November 2023, the Occupational Hygiene and Health Research Initiative (OHHRI) of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the North-West University (NWU) hosted a workshop to share knowledge and best practices regarding the use of direct-reading methodologies and sensors in occupational hygiene. Themed "The changing landscape of occupational hygiene: Challenges and opportunities presented by real-time exposure data", the event brought together 50 professionals, including international representatives, government bodies, universities and industry experts.

Pitch Your Business: empowering young entrepreneurs

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences and bhive Enterprise Development Centre collaborated with I AM Youth, Radio Pulpit, Radio Cape Pulpit and TBN Africa to offer an entrepreneurial training and development programme – culminating in a Pitch Your Business competition – to empower young entrepreneurs.

A season of sharing: NWU supports a Christmas celebration for less fortunate children

Representatives of the North-West University (NWU) supported the Christmas party for underprivileged children hosted by the South African Police Service (SAPS) at the School of Artillery, Klipdrift Military Base on Saturday, 2 December 2023.

Among the distinguished guests were Brigadier Steven Moodley, station commander at the SAPS Potchefstroom, and Colonel Des Ayob, director of Protection Services at the NWU. Mrs Lizelle le Roux, from the office of the deputy-vice chancellor for Information Technology (IT) and Potchefstroom Campus Operations, was the other guest.

Let the staff games begin!

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus is gearing up to be the host of the 22nd edition of the Southern African Universities Staff Sports Association (SAUSSA) games.

Taking place from 11 to 15 December 2023, the event is poised to draw member universities from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, promoting a spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie.

Annually convened in December, the games are hosted on a rotational basis among member universities, with staff members participating in recreational sports, arts, and cultural activities.

Negative factors lead to third quarter’s GDP decline

The decline in the third quarter gross domestic product (GDP) growth to -0,2% from 0,5% in the second quarter of 2023 was worse than expected.

Stats South Africa released the GDP growth figures for the third quarter on 5 December. Prof Raymond Parsons, economist from the North-West University (NWU) Business School, says negative factors have clearly dominated the positive ones to a greater extent than anticipated in that period.

Vanderbijlpark Young Alumni Chapter: empowering underprivileged students

Giving back to the community and supporting underprivileged individuals holds immense value in shaping a better future for all. The Young Alumni Chapter of the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus showcased its commitment to making a difference by donating a significant sum of money towards the education fees of deserving graduates and the university’s Meal-a-Day programme.

This act of kindness took place during the campus’s recent year-end function.

Prof Ian Rothman elected to the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf)

He is renowned for his wealth of expertise and numerous research outputs. Now, Prof Ian Rothman, director of the Optentia Research Unit at the North-West University (NWU), again finds himself in distinguished company on his election as a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf).

ASSAf was formed in 1996 and represents South Africa in the international community of science academies.

Prof Rothman responded with delight to his election to ASSAf from Taiwan, where he was giving a keynote lecture.
