Tottenham tourism saga: Right idea, wrong focus

A proposed three-year deal by the Department of Tourism and SA Tourism to sponsor English Premiership club Tottenham Hotspur has caused widespread consternation and has received plenty of condemnation in what many deem an ill-thought venture.

According to Prof Peet van der Merwe from the research unit TREES (Tourism Research in Economic Environs and Society) at the North-West University (NWU), this amount could have been better used for other tourism purposes.

Theology professor makes inroads with much needed contextualisation discourse

Prof Alfred Brunsdon from the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Faculty of Theology recently received a C2-rating from the National Research Foundation. What makes this recognition noteworthy is the niche area of his research which is discrepancies between academic content and cultural contexts of African theology students.

Further information regarding the handling of an alleged incident related to a female residence on the Potchefstroom Campus

The North-West University (NWU) management is seriously concerned about the allegations which surfaced over the past weekend about the programme proceedings of a residence event on the Potchefstroom Campus. The programme allegedly excluded some students from participating and feeling welcome at the event.

This took place during an event at which outgoing Council members were honoured for their contribution and services to the NWU.

NWU welcomes new SRC members

The North-West University (NWU) welcomes its newly elected Student Representative Council (SRC) that officially took office on 6 September.

The incumbent SRC will serve for a period of one year under the leadership of the SRC president, Yikumba Andreas, a graduate in Management Sciences and Marketing Management, and a current bachelor’s degree student in Economic Sciences with Economics and Risk Management.

Exciting new era begins for the NWU

The inauguration of Dr Bismark Tyobeka as the third vice-chancellor of the North-West University (NWU) is the start of an exciting new journey for the university.

Dr Tyobeka, who started his five-year term as principal and vice-chancellor on 1 June 2022, was officially inaugurated on 26 August during a prestige event at the Feather Hill Hotel and Venue in Potchefstroom.

The North-West University mourns the passing of its student


The North-West University (NWU) is saddened by the passing of a 20-year-old student at the Mahikeng Campus in the afternoon of Tuesday, 26 July 2022. The student’s next of kin have been informed, and some family members have already been on the scene where they were accompanied by members of the South African Police Services (SAPS). Ms Mmathabo Cornelia Sesinyi, a first-year BA Communication student was a resident at the GaTholo off-campus residence. The SAPS have commenced with investigations and would be best suited to answer any questions regarding this tragic incident.

All eyes on Reserve Bank’s rates decision as consumers struggle

Already dealing with soaring food and transport prices, South African consumers await the next blow, the Reserve Bank’s latest repro rate decision.

The bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is expected to announce its decision after its meeting on 21 July, and it appears the committee doesn’t have much room to manoeuvre.

Prof Waldo Krugell, an economist from the North-West University (NWU) Business School, says South Africa has experienced a surge in inflation that has businesses concerned and households under pressure.
