Goitumetswe Ekopanye recognised for her excellence at the North West Cricket Awards

  • Goitumetswe Ekopanye won the Player of the Year Award in the T20 category for the North-West University (NWU) Mafikeng Ladies 1 team at the 2026 North West Cricket Awards.
  • She was also named the Bowler of the Year in the same category, marking this as her first-ever awards she won since playing the sport.

Athletes strike gold at African Championships in Ghana

Six athletes from the North-West University (NWU) returned from the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra with medals around their necks, giving the university one of its strongest performances on the continental stage in recent years.

Competing against some of the leading athletes from Africa at the championships, hosted in Accra, the NWU contingent collected three gold medals, one silver and two bronze medals for Team South Africa.

Athletes secure medals at USSA Championships

North-West University (NWU) athletes delivered medal performances at the University Sport South Africa (USSA) championships after managing tactical races, injuries and recovery during the national university competition.

NWU athlete Andrea Steynberg earned bronze in the women’s 800 m final after moving up from sixth position in the closing stages of the race.

NWU Soccer Institute crowned North West ABC Motsepe League champions

The final whistle sparked a pitch invasion at the Fanie Du Toit Sportsground in Potchefstroom on Sunday afternoon as the NWU Soccer Institute claimed the North West ABC Motsepe League provincial title with a 1-0 victory over Army Rockets FC.

One strike changed the game. One moment separated the two stream winners. Momelezi Mngadi delivered it in the 42nd minute when he unleashed a shot from outside the box that beat the Army Rockets goalkeeper and sent the home supporters into celebration.

Former NWU Soccer Institute player earns PhD, follows path set by institute manager

What started on the football field nearly two decades ago has now produced another doctoral graduate for the North-West University (NWU) Soccer Institute. Former player and current team manager Dr Lawrence Koagile Mosala has obtained his PhD in computer and information sciences with information systems.

Six NWU athletes compete in African Championships in Ghana

Six athletes from the North-West University (NWU) are representing South Africa at the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, placing the university among the country’s strongest contributors to the national team.

The championships, organised by the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) and being hosted at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra from 12 to 17 May, will bring together some of the continent’s leading track and field athletes.

Cheerleading team secures double victory after late competition entry

The cheerleading team on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus turned a last-minute opportunity into a major achievement. They secured top honours in both the Pom and Hip-Hop categories at an intervarsity competition held on 1 May.

The team received an invitation to participate from the Central University of Technology (CUT) on 17 April, leaving them less than two weeks to prepare.

Karate Eagles secure multiple medals in dual tournament success

Twenty-nine medals from two karate tournaments are impressive by anybody’s standards. This is the medal haul that the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus Karate Eagles brought home from tournaments in Mamelodi and Rustenburg.

At the Siyakhumbula Memorial Tournament in Mamelodi on 11 April, the Karate Eagles competed in the full-contact division and had 10 podium finishes: one gold medal, three silver medals and six bronze medals.

NWU student Bradley Nkoana strengthens global sprint credentials with relay success

Bradley Nkoana, Olympic star and proud NWU Eagle, continues to soar on the global stage after delivering another excellent result for South Africa at the World Athletics Relays.

Nkoana formed part of the South African 4x100 m relay team alongside Akani Simbine, Cheswill Johnson and Mvuyo Moss, with the quartet securing second place. The performance also ensured qualification for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in China, marking another milestone for the national team.
