QS World University Rankings reconfirm NWU to be among the best

The latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranking has placed the North-West University (NWU) among the top eight South African universities in the QS World University Rankings, which were released on 8 June.

Globally, the NWU has been placed in the 1 001 to 1 200 ranking category for the 2022/2023 QS World University Rankings – the same as last year. The NWU’s performance has been consistent in this ranking category for the past four years.

North-West University students contribute towards the planting of 2 353 trees

North-West University (NWU) students recently participated in the Universum Career Test survey, which resulted in the planting of 2 353 trees. As part of a global reforestation initiative called "One Tree Planted", an amount (in dollars) was donated. The initiative aims to plant trees around the world.

Renowned educationist passed away

A well-known former dean of the Faculty of Education and vice-rector at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus, Prof Dewey de Wet, passed away in the early hours of Saturday, 2 July in his house in Potchefstroom.

Prof de Wet studied at the former Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education (PU for CHE), now the NWU, where he obtained his BSc degree in mathematics and science, UOD, BEd, MEd and DEd degrees, as well as a BScHons degree from UNISA.

NWU principal and vice-chancellor joins world leaders in nuclear science for international webinar

North-West University’s principal and vice-chancellor, Dr Bismark Tyobeka, has been invited by prominent global leaders in nuclear affairs to be a panelist in an international webinar on the role of nuclear and radiology safety in the peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology.

It’s all about the vintage – of wine as well as people

The older the wine lovers, the drier the wine they prefer, and the longer it takes to consume what they bought.

These are two of the findings of a recent study on the wine preferences of different age groups that the research unit TREES (Tourism Research in Economics, Environs and Society) undertook.

In the study, “That old saying about wine and age: identifying South African age-cohort preferences”, the research team of Prof Martinette Kruger and Dr Adam Viljoen found that age plays a significant role in the preferences of wine consumers.

North-West University announces new chairperson and deputy chairperson of its Council

During its meeting on 23 June 2022 the North-West University (NWU) Council elected a new chairperson and deputy chairperson.

Mr Bert Sorgdrager, a seasoned legal professional with more than 30 years’ experience in the private sector, was elected as the sixth chairperson of the NWU Council. Mr Obakeng Mongale, an experienced public servant and the current superintendent general for the North West Department of Health, will serve as deputy chairperson.

NWU Soccer Institute books its place in the semi-finals of the ABC Motsepe national playoffs

The North-West University (NWU) Soccer Institute has booked a place in the ABC Motsepe League national promotion playoffs semi-final. This came after they thrashed early tournament favourites Summerfield Dynamos from Kwazulu-Natal 3-1 on 16 June 2022 in Potchefstroom.

On Wednesday, the NWU won their first game of the ABC Motsepe League national promotion playoffs against Mpumalanga side Bayern by 1-0. The NWU goal in this match was scored by Lindani Nkabinde.

NWU Soccer Institute crowned North West ABC Motsepe League champions

The North-West University (NWU) Soccer Institute has been crowned champions of the North West Province ABC Motsepe League. As a result, the institute will represent the North West Province at the 2022 ABC Motsepe League National Playoffs.

The institute was declared the winner during the North West ABC league encounter with Orbit College FC after they played a 1-1 draw. The game was supposed to be decided on penalties, but Orbit wanted extra time, and as a result they abandoned the game.
