The ins and outs of developing online multimedia learning platforms

Offering an enhanced learning experience using multimedia online learning platforms is the key to encouraging participation among Generation Z students – people born between 1997 and the early 2010s.

This is one of the findings of a North-West University (NWU) research team after they investigated both the ins and the outs of the development of student pages on learning management systems (LMSs).

NWU lecturer brings Kahoot’s awesomeness to the classroom

Kurt Naicker, a senior lecturer and chartered accountant at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) School of Accounting Sciences, recently presented the first virtual annual Kahoot Higher Ed Meetup and 10-year celebration of bringing awesomeness to classrooms worldwide.

Kahoot is a tool that can be used to engage students in the learning process by using gamification techniques. It is an online game-based learning platform that allows educators to create and share interactive quizzes, surveys, and discussions with their students.

Guiding Grade 9 learners on their path to success

You should start planning your future career as early as in Grade 9. This was what North-West University (NWU) statistics lecturer Dr Piet Ntema, told Grade 9 learners during a recent career guidance workshop.

Dr Ntema hosted the workshop in partnership with the office of Prof Rodney Medupe, deputy dean for community engagement and stakeholder relations at the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, and Phomolong Community Library.

Inaugural conference calls for the re-intellectualising of African languages

It is difficult for researchers to find funding for research in African languages and more work needs to be done to promote African languages as languages of research, teaching and learning.

This was mentioned at the inaugural Batho Abantu African Languages Association (BAALA) conference that was hosted by the North-West University’s (NWU’s) School of Languages, the NWU Language Directorate and SEFALA.

The conference brought together local and international researchers in African languages and took place at the Riverside Sun Hotel in Vanderbijlpark.

COMPRES addresses development and training needs of researchers

Prof Elmien Truter, associate professor of social work and research coordinator at Community Psychosocial Research (COMPRES), recently arranged a one-day workshop for researchers at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus.

COMPRES is a research focus area that provides research support and services to researchers and students within the field of social sciences.

NWU hosts inter-university networking session for academics

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) School of Industrial Psychology and Human Resource Management (IPS & HRM) recently hosted an academic networking brunch with academics from the University of Johannesburg (UJ), WITS University and the University of Pretoria.

The purpose of the event was to build research collaborations, get more moderators and examiners, and to ensure that the school benchmarked well against other universities.

NWU water expert presents water policy brief at UN Conference

Prof Frank Winde, a professor in environmental science at the North-West University (NWU), recently presented a Water Policy Brief at the United Nations (UN) Water Conference that took place at the UN Headquarters in New York. 

This was the first global water conference in nearly 50 years and stakeholders across the globe were welcome to attend. Officially known as the 2023 Conference for the Midterm Comprehensive Review of Implementation of the UN Decade for Action on Water and Sanitation (2018-2028), the gathering attracted more than 6 600 delegates from 150 countries.

NWU Vanderbijlpark Campus celebrates Water Week

To mark National Water Week, the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Geography subject group hosted a water awareness event at the Vanderbijlpark Campus.

Water Week is a national awareness week celebrated in March every year, coinciding with World Water Day on 22 March. This year’s celebration also coincided with the United Nations’ 2023 Water Conference taking place in New York from 22 to 24 March.
