Orientation Programme

As in the past, the Orientation Programme aims to ease first-year students into university life.

According to Prof Lumkile Lalendle, executive director for student life, the programme provides students with the opportunity to learn and master new strategies for adjusting to university life. During the course of the programme all first-year students will attend several information sessions and practical workshops that will outline the NWU policies on topical issues such as the responsible use of social media, human rights, a zero tolerance for initiation practices and anti-social behaviour such as sexual harassment and xenophobia.

Another important focus of the programme is to introduce students to their new teaching and learning environment and in this regard, students will learn more about academic support services such as the Learning and Research Commons, the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) as well as Information Technology (IT) Management.

Thirdly, the programme will focus on the overall social and emotional wellness of the new intake of first-year students. Interactive discussion sessions on safety, the student judicial service and the healthcare centre will provide food for thought in this regard, while meetings with the Student Campus Committee and the different student leadership structures will ensure that all students all well aware of the goings on at the university and the campus.

On Saturday, 27 January, the first years will undertake a big community engagement drive followed by a Fun Day at the Emerald Resort and Casino. The programme runs to a close on Saturday, 3 February when the campus will host its official Welcoming Ceremony for the first-year students and their parents.
