Mathematician and research professor of the Mahikeng Campus of the North-West University (NWU), Prof Jamshid Moori, was recently invited to speak at the fourth conference of the Biannual International Group Theory Conference (BIGTC) in Kuala Lumpur.

Jamshid, of the School of Mathematical Sciences in the Faculty of Agriculture, Science and Technology, was one of two plenary speakers at the conference,  held at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM from 20 to 27 January this year.

“The aim of the conference was to exchange research ideas among the group theorists and postgraduate students from various countries,” says Jamshid. “I was greatly honoured to be invited by the international organising committee.”

He says specialists in group theory presented their latest research, outlined open problems and encouraged interested young researches and students to progress and widen their knowledge of the subject and its applications during the conference.

Latest research results presented
Jamshid presented his latest research results in a speech titled, “Designs and Codes from Finite Groups”. Prof Mark Lewis of the Kent State University in America gave the second plenary lecture, called “Semi Extra Special p-Groups”.

There were also 12 invited speakers from the United Kingdom, United States of America, Russia, Iran, Turkey, Malaysia and Indonesia.

A further 35 speakers, most of them young researchers and postdoctoral and postgraduate students, spoke during two parallel sessions. “It was wonderful to hear one of my postdoctoral students, Dr AB Basheer talking about Fischer- Clifford Matrices.”

He says the conference was a memorable event. “It is always good to meet and engage other academics and researchers around the world and develop a better understanding of the subject and field of mathematics and its related fields.”

The conference ended with a one-day excursion to a few interesting places in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.
