NWU named title sponsor for North West Dragons domestic games in 2025

The North-West University (NWU) emphasised its dedication to supporting the North West Dragons as the franchise’s title sponsor for the 2025 domestic games.

The partnership was officially unveiled during a special launch event held on 12 February at the NWU Potchefstroom Campus. North West Cricket (NWC) proudly revealed the team’s newly branded NWU kit, symbolising a strengthened relationship between the institution and the franchise.

This is a game-changing collaboration that not only intensifies the existing relationship between the NWU and the NWC but also highlights the impact of sponsorships in boosting the Dragons to greater success. Speaking at the launch, Ismail Minty, CEO of the NWC, emphasised the significance of this partnership.

“It is a unique partnership; we do not see universities in South Africa investing in unions at this level. This partnership demonstrates the trust the NWU has in the NWC, and we hope it evolves into a long-term commitment.”

Prof Daryl Balia, deputy vice-chancellor for Information Technology and Campus Operations (Potchefstroom Campus), echoed this sentiment, highlighting the university’s broader vision behind the sponsorship. “We are joining forces with a sporting organisation that is enthusiastic about developing cricket within the community. Cricket fosters teamwork, discipline and resilience – values that we strongly support. At the NWU we want to see the Dragons grow, win trophies and make an impact, and we are committed to supporting them on that journey.”

NWC President Zubayr Minty believes this sponsorship will display the immense potential of both organisations, while Dragons captain Wihan Lubbe, an NWU alumnus, described the partnership as a natural fit.

“It is always a privilege to be associated with the NWU. I can confidently say that many players are excited about this collaboration. It strengthens our connection with the university and the broader community.”

Beyond the immediate benefits of this collaboration, the NWU sees an opportunity to leverage its investment on a global scale. Prof Balia outlined the university’s intent to engage international partners, particularly in India, where cricket enjoys great popularity.

“We have well-established relationships with business entities in India, and we need to explore their interests in collaborating with us on sports ventures – especially in cricket. This could open doors for new partnerships and investment opportunities.”

The launch event also featured the much-anticipated squad announcement, followed by a discussion with key leadership figures, including Ismail Minty, Prof Daryl Balia, Zubayr Minty and Wihan Lubbe.

As the NWU steps into the role of elite sponsor, this collaboration brings significant advantages, including enhancing the university’s brand visibility, community engagement, and creating opportunities for students. This partnership strengthens the NWU’s presence in professional sports, while encouraging the students to engage with high-level cricket.
