A number of new buildings are being constructed, such as a new administration hub, an on-campus residence and an academic building for Psycho-Social Health Sciences, along with several new lecture facilities.
Building the future
The current administrative office building will be remodelled to house a multi-purpose auditorium and break-away venues. In future, the auditorium will be used for events such as graduation ceremonies and first-year reception events.
Owing to new residential developments and a new school in Hendrik van Eck Boulevard, the campus has had to move its entrance gate to another location in the street. The envisaged administration building will be situated near the new gate, which was officially opened on 7 August.
The infrastructure developments are being funded by an infrastructure efficiency grant from the Department of Higher Education and Training and will be completed by the end of 2021.
Constructing excellence
“I am very excited about this new phase of development on the campus,” says Prof Linda du Plessis, deputy vice-chancellor for planning and for campus operations in Vanderbijlpark.
“By investing in our infrastructure footprint, the NWU is continually striving to provide state-of-the-art facilities to meet the high demands set for providing a conducive teaching and learning environment, delivering excellent research and facilitating knowledge transfer and industry links,” says Prof Du Plessis.
