The conference, to be hosted in Durban, will take place from 23 – 25 August 2017 and will see delegates from around the world in attendance while global experts will be sharing their respective views on the impact and importance of social sciences.
Muthien is one such an expert, and was recently quoted in the media as saying: “It is important for me to recognise where things come from in order for us to locate it in history and understand the deep roots of it.”
This statement not only encapsulates Muthien’s passion and dedication towards issues of constitutional importance, but also why she is regarded as an accomplished research force to be reckoned with.
More about Bernedette Muthien
Muthien boasts with more than 22 years of experience as a facilitator and researcher on all six continents and has authored more than 200 publications and conference papers – some which have been translated from English into at least 16 local and international languages.
She has held senior executive management positions in academia, civil society and government (in South Africa and abroad) and, is currently a Commissioner in the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities.
Muthien was the first Fulbright-Amy Biehl fellow at Stanford University (1994-1995), and holds postgraduate degrees in Political Science from the University of Cape Town (Dean’s Merit List, 1992), and Stellenbosch University (Andrew W Mellon Fellow, 2006-2007) in South Africa.
She serves on various international advisory boards, including the international journal Human Security Studies, as well as the International Institute on Peace Education.

ICSS represents a platform for individuals who are interested in all fields of social sciences and as such the conference focuses on disciplines such as economics, entrepreneurship, corporate and public governance, political science and sociology – to name but a few.
By means of the ICSS conference the organisers aim to bring together a wide audience of academics, policy makers and practitioners around clearly defined topics, engage participants in fruitful debate, and facilitate mutual understanding. An additional goal of the conference is to provide a place for members of academia and professionals with interdisciplinary/ multidisciplinary interests related to social sciences to meet and interact with members inside and outside their own particular disciplines.
This year sees Prof Herman van der Merwe – executive dean of the Faculty of Economic Sciences and Information Technology, and Prof Babs Surujlal – Director: Research Development, both from the NWU, serving as conference co-chairpersons. The third conference co-chairperson will be Prof Can Aktan – Chairman: Social Sciences Research Society, Turkey.
