Through the intervention, also referred to as the BTMG programme, many learners have not only overcome their anxiety towards mathematics, but are also flourishing as students within the challenging BCom and BSc fields.
Many of these learners went from obtaining dismal marks for mathematics in the National Senior Certificate examination, to enrolling and successfully completing their degree studies in economics, accounting, business informatics and information technology.
According to Daleen Gerber, director of the School for Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, the programme aims to assist Grade-12 learners to better their final marks and by doing so allow for greater access to higher education. This in turn helps to address the dire need of scarce skill graduates.
“The reality is that when a prospective student falls short in terms of his or her Admissions Point Score (APS) tally, or if the mathematics mark is lower than required, students either don’t qualify to pursue certain degree courses or they are admitted provisionally,” says Daleen. She explains that by passing the BTMG programme at the beginning of the new academic year, these students can enrol for the desired programmes based on their performance during the programme.
The BTMG syllabus covers not only basic mathematical concepts – which are taught from Grade 8 and onwards – but also the application of these concepts in accordance with the outcomes specified in the Grade-12 curriculum. In short: an intensified focus on the entire mathematical spectrum that will serve as the underpinning for the mathematics modules in the BCom and BSc curriculums respectively.

The next rendition of the BTMG programme will take place from 5 to 19 January 2019 and a maximum of 50 students can be accommodated.
Please note that only students who have already applied to study at the NWU’s campus in Vanderbijlpark and who already have conditional acceptance, are allowed to apply for this intervention programme. Furthermore – no candidates with mathematical literacy will be accepted.
The programme will run from Mondays to Saturdays and will comprise intensive tutoring – both individually and within a group setup. The cost involved amounts to R3 500 per participant.
