According to Prof Heleen Janse van Vuuren, coordinating director at the School of Accounting Sciences, the CTA qualification is a prerequisite for SAICA’s Initial Test of Competence – or ITC as it is known.
“The CTA class is hard at work five days a week, and experience immense pressure, “explains Prof Janse van Vuuren and adds that the gala event allows the students to take a worthwhile breather and enjoy themselves before they resume their strenuous preparation for their final exam in September and October. The gala is made possible by the support of KPMG Secunda.
In his address, Hennie Viviers, a representative from KPMG Secunda and an NWU alumnus, congratulated the students on their perseverance and hard work. He encouraged them to make the most of their academic studies and assured them that their academic commitment will render dividends.
The gala event is also an important event for the School of Accounting Sciences’ academic clerks. These clerks have already passed the ITC exam in January and are busy with their clerkship at the Vanderbijlpark campus. Prof Janse van Vuuren explains that as part of their training the clerks are responsible for organising and managing the annual gala event.
Building forth on a solid foundation
The CTA Class of 2018 has big shoes to fill, so to speak. Their predecessors achieved a 93% pass rate for first-time ITC candidates during the January 2018 rendition of the SAICA exam. In all, the NWU was one of only four universities across South Africa to score above the 90%. The national average was set at 78%
Attending the gala event are from left: Andrew Lumley (KMPG), Mariana Delport (NWU), Anneke Moolman (NWU), Heleen Janse van Vuuren (NWU), Alinka Mostert (NWU) and Hennie Viviers (KPMG).
